I enjoy trying to capture the feel of the surf rushing to shore on my canvas.

The ocean seems to have a different character and color each time I visit.  This is the east coast of Florida, while California is much more rugged and has a deep rich blue hue.

I like to use my daily paintings very informally in my home.  Just prop them up where ever the mood strikes! No frame necessary!

I was going through my reference photo files, looking for inspiration, when I found an image from several years ago.  It's funny how I can be totally unimpressed with an image, and then one day, WOW!  I just have to paint it.

This is the place of my dreams. The water is pristine and clear, the sand is sparkling white, and the sky is blue. Stress is a thing of the past when you are in a place like this. It's beautiful Tahiti Beach, not in the Pacific, but on Elbow Cay in the Abacos Islands, Bahamas. There is no traffic because there are no cars. A golf cart suffices. One of my favorite places ever. Drop me off with my paints for a month or so.

Digital Art: Sketchbook to Poster

I dabble with paint, but I thrive on digital art. My favorite way to relax is to bring up Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator and just play. The great thing about digital art is you can print it to fabric, posters, tiles, etc. The not so great thing is that it only really exists in your computer until you do print it. 

In hopes that there are some people who read our blog who are interested in digital art, I've assembled a few graphics that show my process - from sketchbook to poster. 

I do keep a sketchbook. When I have time to create, I usually start by scanning an idea from my sketchbook. These are often only a few inches in size, but I scale them up to 8x10 because that makes a great 16x20 poster. I then place the idea in Illustrator and start building the design. Sometimes I build in color, sometimes in black and white. But I always experiment a long time with color, gradients, patterns, blend modes and strokes in Illustrator. Once I'm happy with the idea in Illustrator, I can't wait to take it into Photoshop. Then it's even more fun to experiment with color, gradients, patterns, strokes and blend modes. And there it stays until I decide to print it to something!

In the three recent examples below, the left image is the sketch right from my sketchbook. The next image is about midway done in Illustrator. The third image is at the end of the time in Illustrator right before taking it into Photoshop. And the last image is the final image after time in Photoshop.

The Joy of Being an Artist

Way back last year, I received an e-mail from 10-11 year old boy in Cleveland who was working on an art project.  His assignment was to interview an artist and do a powerpoint presentation.  He asked me a few general questions about my art.  This phone painting is what interested him.

I am sure many of you receive the same type of requests.  I have had several, from young students.  I always reply, trying to  answer their inquiries, without doing ALL the work for their report.  Occasionally, I will get a "thank you" in return, often nothing.

This young boy from Cleveland, Jake, is not the usual.  We had several exchanges.  He was always extremely polite , and always promised to send me reports.  And he did!  He sent me an outline of his presentation, then I got a video of him giving it.  My favorite question from his audience was "is she still alive?", which he answered with a resounding "yes"...Whew!

My children and grandchildren were excited and thrilled to see all this activity about me in Cleveland.

After a few weeks, he sent me his grade (he aced it) on the project, and I though we were through.  But no....  He also has to do a painting that emulates my work.

This is my second update on his painting in progress.  Note the picture of my phone, there on the table.

And here  is the finished piece!  Didn't he do well!!?!!

I am thrilled, each time I hear from him.  This has been such an  exciting experience for me and hopefully for him too.  I now understand why people choose to teach, and, what a wonderful teacher he has.  He or she has set him on a road that will stay with him for life. What a fantastic project for a young mind.   Bravo!!

So, for me, painting has been so much more than just painting.  Today, I have a new energy and desire to get back to the easel....how lucky am I?  Thank you Jake!

I worked hard on this one, trying to retain the bold brushwork and saturated color that makes his technique special.  I think it is a good start for me, but I have lots of area for improvement.

Practice makes perfect.  I am pretty sure he would tell me to make the flower on the table look less like a flower and more like paint.
